E-Bike Requirements in NJ: What You Need to Know as New Rules Take Effect
As of July 19, 2026, the six-month grace period for enforcing New Jersey electric bicycle (e-bike) laws ends. Whether e-bikes are used for commuting, everyday transportation, or fun, failure to comply could result in a fine of up to $50 per violation. If you break multiple rules, you could get multiple citations totaling up to $150 per traffic stop.
It’s important to remember that e-bikes are now legally classified as motorized vehicles, not bicycles. Bicycle rules don’t apply. If you or your child rides an e-bike, New Jersey is ready to enforce what have been called the strictest e-bike laws in the nation.
Riders Must Be at Least 15 Years Old
If your 13-year-old has been riding an e-bike to and from school or the park, they’ll have to go back to pedal power. The minimum age for e-bikes is 15.
Helmets Are Required
E-bike riders of all ages are required to wear a helmet, not just minors.
Insurance Is Required
Homeowners insurance typically does not meet state insurance requirements for e-bikes. Liability insurance is required to provide protection against injuries and property damage caused by e-bikes. Stanton Insurance Group offers insurance policies specifically for e-bikes.
Registration Is Required
All e-bikes must be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC). First-year registration fees have been waived for 2026, but you should expect to pay an annual fee beginning in 2027. To register, you’ll need valid identification, proof of insurance, and a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) or purchase receipt.
Licensing Is Required
For people ages 17 and older, a valid driver’s license meets the requirement. Children ages 15 and 16 will have to get a motorized bicycle license. Just like a traditional driver’s license, you’ll have to pass vision, written, and road tests.
Carrying Proof While Riding Is Required
E-bike riders must carry proof of insurance, registration documentation, and licensing. Law enforcement may request these items during a traffic stop.
Additional Restrictions
Know the rules of the road! Most e-bikes are banned from sidewalks, natural-surface trails and paths, and roads with speed limits above 50 mph. Stay in standard traffic lanes and designated road bike lanes unless local laws say otherwise. Keep in mind that modification kits are illegal, and online sales of higher-powered e-bikes are banned for one year in New Jersey.
