Umbrella Insurance FAQs
Umbrella insurance is extra liability protection that extends beyond your home and auto policies, covering lawsuits, injuries, and property damage claims.
When you reach your policy limit on an auto or home claim, umbrella insurance kicks in to cover the remaining balance, up to your umbrella policy limit.
Example: If you cause a car accident resulting in $500,000 in injuries and your auto policy only covers $300,000, your umbrella policy would step in to cover the remaining $200,000, up to your policy limit.
Most experts recommend an umbrella policy limit that matches or exceeds your total net worth. To determine how much coverage you need:
- Add up your assets (cash, investments, property, etc.).
- Consider risk factors like teenage drivers, rental properties, or frequent hosting.
Consult an SIG agent to find the right protection level for your household.
Homeowners, landlords, or anyone with significant assets, high income, or higher liability risks like teen drivers, pets, or pools.
Typically between $200 and $400 per year for $1 million in coverage.
A separate policy for businesses that extends liability limits on commercial coverage.
Umbrella insurance doesn’t cover:
- Your own injuries or property damage
- Business-related liability (see Commercial Umbrella Insurance for that)
- Intentional or criminal acts
- Liabilities you assume under a contract
