Spring Home Maintenance Checklist for Insurance Claims Prevention
You can’t do much about damage caused by the most severe storms. That’s what we’re here for. But a lot of home damage is preventable if you take steps now to avoid unnecessary repairs and homeowners insurance claims.
Now that homes have finally thawed from the snow, ice, and bitter cold, follow this simple spring home maintenance checklist to help protect your home from heavy wind, rain, and costly damage.
Check the Roof
Don’t climb up there. Leave that to licensed professionals with proper insurance. From the ground and windows, check for missing or damaged shingles, loose flashing, and cracked rubber boots around pipes. Any of these issues can increase the risk of water penetration and lead to costly home damage.
Clear Gutters and Downspouts
Leaves, branches, and other debris can add weight and prevent water from draining properly. This can damage your gutters and increase the risk of water seeping into your house through the roof. Also, make sure your downspouts direct water at least three feet away from your home to help protect your foundation.
Inspect the Foundation
Check inside and outside for cracks and gaps that could allow water to enter your home. Seal small cracks and contact a professional if you notice cracks getting worse or signs of moisture around the foundation.
Trim Tree Branches
Look for branches that have been weakened by the weight of heavy snow or are growing too close to your house. Trim smaller branches to help prevent damage and call a tree professional to safely remove heavier, thicker limbs.
Seal Windows and Doors
Check weatherstripping and caulking around windows and doors for cracks and gaps. These signs of wear can increase the risk of water damage and reduce energy efficiency. Replacing worn seals is a simple, inexpensive way to help protect your home and lower utility bills.
Check Plumbing and HVAC
Inspect outdoor spigots, faucets, and showers for cracks, and turn on the water slowly to make sure they’re working properly. Check your outdoor air conditioning unit or heat pump condenser for debris and damage, and don’t forget to schedule routine spring maintenance with a certified technician.
